Travel time! A la 2021

We (my husband Pete and myself) started with the alarm going off at 5 am on January 5th. I don’t think I’ve been this excited about a trip since this time last year – which it so happens was the last time my passport got a workout.

We arrive into Detroit at 8:30 am to wait for our 6:30 pm flight to Amsterdam- a hotel room for the day was definitely in order and having the Westin attached to our terminal at the airport made the decision easier still. Pro tip – when your check in for the 1st flight is more than 12 hours before your 2nd your bags can’t be checked through so we had to collect bags in Detroit and re-check them.

I am still shocked and saddened to see the number of people that boldly and belligerently ignore the mask wearing rules. Every 10th person or so it seemed either had their nose hanging out above their mask, off entirely or was wearing it like a chin strap. What the heck people?! That said, I still felt safe as the airport was not crowded.

Fortunately, we had been squirreling away point and miles for a year and we were able to ride up front this time! Being able to board first and remain in our little cocoons made me feel safer still.

We did have to fill out a few sheets of paperwork apiece regarding Covid that was never checked, upon arrival in the Netherlands more paperwork and this time our temperatures were take before we were given our gate number for the flight to Nairobi. Easy and straightforward and only mildly inconvenient- still worth it!

We boarded the brand new KLM Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, which was exactly that – Dreamy! The flight crew was awesome. All meals and drinks served in glasses and china. The food was delicious, the movie selection great and I ate and drank my weight in the 8 hours we were on the plane – I’m sure. I would have gladly stayed on this plane longer. I’m weird like that – I like long haul flights. Binge eating, drinking and movie watching without the guilt!

Moving on to arrival and first day in Kenya soon!
