Africa – Not Just for Safaris

The choices of experiences seem endless

Do you know there are a multitude of ways to enjoy a journey in Africa? Everything from the antiquities of Egypt to the deserts of Morocco, the history of Ethiopia, traditional safaris, sea safaris, fly camping and camel trekking in Kenya, all the way to shores Mozambique, the wilds of Namibia, the glory of Victoria Falls in Zambia, the mighty Zambezi River, and the beauty and luxury of Cape Town and the magnificence of South Africa’s endless velds.

My own experience in 2019, when I headed to Kenya for a horse-riding safari with a local company called Safari Unlimited, began my love affair with this magical destination.

There is complexity in planning an African experience – logistics of internal flights, park and reserve fees, transfers and visa applications are a few things to consider. On top of that, there is a wealth of camps and lodges to choose from. Of course factors like budget and time of year will help narrow accommodation options down but ultimately, my expertise will guide you to the right choice for you.

The location of lodges varies extensively. For example, a lodge that sits on a private reserve may offer exclusivity and a wider variety of activities (horse-riding, night safaris, bush walks, camel supported walking safaris, fly camping, and mountain biking to name a few).

Another key aspect to the planning is when to go. The best time of year to enjoy an African safari depends on which country you head to and your adventure of choice. If your interested in Morocco or Egypt the hotter months are best to avoid, in East Africa has wet season and dry season, Botswana enjoys the flooding of the Okavango Delta and the amazing game viewing that comes with it, Uganda and Rwanda provide practically year round opportunities for gorilla and chimpanzee trekking, while South Africa has a more traditional 4 season climate.

With so many countries and parks offering a unique experience, it can be overwhelming if it is your first visit to Africa. Each country offers a different experience in terms of its animal species, landscape, guiding and activities but what they all do is offer a fulfilling and authentic immersion to any degree you are willing to go. No matter how long you spend in the countries of your choice, the experience will undoubtedly leave its mark on your heart, as it did mine. I cannot wait to start planning your African adventure!
